Road traffic accidents have a significant global impact, causing millions of deaths and injuries annually. Each year, approximately 1.3 million individuals lose their lives, and up to 50 million people are injured due to road accidents. This poses a significant threat, especially to individuals aged 5-29 years, making it the leading cause of mortality in this age group. Shockingly, pedestrians and cyclists account for 25% of all road-related fatalities worldwide.
To combat this alarming trend, the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 has set an ambitious target of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030. The plan emphasizes the importance of addressing the entire transportation system, including safe roads, vehicles, and behaviors, as well as improving emergency care, to prevent such incidents.
As part of its efforts, the World Health Organization (WHO) collaborates with various partners to organize periodic UN Global Road Safety Weeks. The focus of the 7th edition is sustainable transport, specifically advocating for a shift towards walking, cycling, and public transportation. Recognizing that road safety is both a prerequisite for and an outcome of this transition, the aim is to promote safer and more sustainable mobility.
In support of this initiative, WHO encourages all road safety and sustainable mobility partners to participate in the 7th UN Global Road Safety Week by organizing events and activities. Additionally, sharing messages and materials on social media using the hashtags #RethinkMobility, #StreetsforLife, and #RoadSafety can help spread awareness and promote positive change.
